Breast Augmentation: Why Some Patients Regret Going Too Small

When women choose breast surgery to increase breast size, they must be sure the implants they pick will fit their body type. While many women desire to go much bigger, others prefer to add only subtle volume to their breasts. Unfortunately, the latter often feel that in being too careful in not electing too big of implants, they elected a size that was too small.

Too Small May Not Be a Problem

Many women get anxious in the first few days after surgery because their breasts appear too small.  They wanted larger breasts and felt the procedure failed them soon after surgery.  Many times, this is because the implants ride high and appear small immediately after surgery.  However, time will resolve this issue and the implants will eventually “drop and fluff” into their permanent position revealing the results you and your surgeon talked about during your consultation.

“Drop” refers to your implants falling into place when breast tissue conforms to the shape and size of the implants. Fluff occurs when they relax into the lower portion of your chest area taking on a natural, teardrop contour. This process may take several weeks to complete so that initial worries may be premature.

Having the Right Expectation

Board-certified plastic surgeon,  Dr. Ben Lee, believes thorough consultations for patients considering breast augmentation are necessary to ensure a clear understanding of the surgery and what they can expect from their results. Too often in cosmetic surgery, there is too much selling and not enough consulting.

Understanding the full dynamics of breast augmentation, breast implants, and their realistic results are crucial for patients to be satisfied with their outcomes. When a patient believes her results should be other than what they turn out to be, poor communication between surgeon and patient may be the problem.

At Denver Aesthetic Surgery, we have a process in place which we educate the patient on every aspect of the procedure. This process may include informing the patient that the size they chose may not be a healthy or good fit for their lifestyle. We employ computer imaging to ensure the patient has a good picture of the results they can expect so there will be no surprises once the recovery is complete.
