What Is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck—also known as abdominoplasty—is a surgical procedure designed to rejuvenate and restore the abdominal area. After pregnancy or weight loss, many women find themselves with a permanent poochy appearance to their stomach. Abdominal fat is hard to lose, and stretched out skin and muscles make the problem even worse. In a tummy tuck, excess skin and fat are removed and muscles are tightened. The end result is a flat, tight abdominal area—often one that looks better than it ever has.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?
Do you love the appearance of your abdominal area? If not, come see if a tummy tuck is right for you. You may be a good candidate if:
- You have stretched out abdominal skin from pregnancy or weight gain/loss.
- You look pregnant even when you’re not.
- You are finished bearing children.
- Diet and exercise aren’t restoring a flat appearance to your tummy.
What Is Recovery Like After a Tummy Tuck?
After your surgery, you’ll be wrapped in a compression bandage to support the muscles and to aid in healing. Many patients experience aching pain, swelling, fatigue, numbness, and bruising. Most common during the first week, these symptoms will fade as the body heals. Many patients struggle to stand upright at first.
You’ll need to sleep in an elevated position during the first two weeks. Avoid strenuous exercise for about six weeks. You can return to work when you’re comfortable, which is often about two weeks after surgery. You should be fully recovered in a couple of months.
